Sleep is a very important activity, one that many people do not give enough credit to. After a good night's sleep you feel refreshed and ready for the day's activities, if you get too little sleep then you may find that you get tired easily and do not have as much energy as well as being in a foul mood too.
A lot of people these days are getting less sleep as people work longer hours and have families to tend to once they get home from work too. This can lead to a feeling that there aren't enough hours in the day and so the number of hours of good sleep that we get can begin to decrease. It is important though that we ensure we get a decent night's sleep and there are a few activities that you can do to help promote the feeling that you need to sleep.

One of the best ways to get more sleep is to try to time your meals so that you aren't eating later on, eating your dinner later on can leave you feeling quite full and could be uncomfortable when trying to get to sleep. There are also some food types to avoid such as fizzy drinks and coffee, these drinks will have plenty of sugar and caffeine which will keep you awake as your body gets a buzz of energy which you won't want as you are trying to settle down for some sleep.
Our energy levels can be what keeps us awake too, if you find you can lie restless in bed for long periods of time then you may need to start spending some of this energy before going to bed, exercising is a great way to drain your energy and send vital signals to your body that it's time for some rest.
Sleeping is very important not only to recharge the batteries but a number of vital processes happen whilst we are asleep such as memories being built by our brains and healing for any damage or injuries that we may have sustained. Without the recommended amount of sleep (roughly 8-9 hours) these processes are not able to reach their potential and so a lack of sleep can also lead to drop in our general health too.
It is also a good idea to allow yourself a lie in every now and then, the weekends are often the perfect time for people working long hours during the week, just try not to sleep away the whole of the weekend and enjoy yourself as well!
