How I Got Rid of Bed Bugs

There are many articles that are on the internet floating around that will trick you into believing that if you read it you will be able to get rid of bed bugs. Then once you get on to reading the article, they all point to getting a professional exterminator, which we all know can be pretty pricey.

Now I am not going to guarantee that after reading this you will be able to get rid of bed bugs, but it did work for me. My apartment was infected with bed bugs, and every morning my girlfriend and I would wake up with some bed bugs bites that were not there the previous night when we went to bed.

I did some research on bed bugs and learned all about their feeding habits, their strengths and their weaknesses and put together a little plan on how to get rid of them. The best thing about it is, it didn't cost much money at all to start getting rid of those blood sucking annoyances.

I moved the bed where my girlfriend and I slept in a couple of inches away from the wall, this way they could not access the bed from the wall, where they like to hide out at. Then I had bought a dust mite mattress cover, so if there where bedbugs hiding in the crevasses of the mattress, they would not be able to get out and feed.

I then put double sided tape on each leg of the bed frame. Now the bed bugs had no way to get onto the bed and feed, seeing as they are wingless creatures and cannot fly.

Next I got a small extension cord and hooked up my girlfriend's hair dryer, turning it as high of temperature as it would go. Then I started to blow the hair dryer on suspected spots where bed bugs might be hiding out, like behind outlet plates, night stands, cracks and crevasses.

The mattress wasn't badly infested at all so all I did was go up and down the mattress with a hot iron, paying special attention to the cracks and crevices. Along with that I also went up and down the mattress with the blow dryer.

After going nuts with the blow dryer, buying the double sided tape, and buying the dust mite cover, I have not noticed anymore bed bug bites to this day, which is about 8 months later. So will this work for everyone? Maybe not, but it did work for me as I got rid of the bed bugs before the room became majorly infested.

A PVC Greenhouse - Step by Step

Assuming that you've already chosen the perfect spot to place your small PVC greenhouse, here is a step-by-step guide on how to build a simple PVC house of your own.

1. Zip ties
2. Nails/screws
3. Metal bands
4. Door hinges and door handles
5. (50) 4' wood lathe
6. (34) 1/2"x24"-30"pieces of rebar (lengths somewhere in this range are fine).
7. (19) 1/2"x20' PVC pipes.
8. (14) 2x4 - 12' sections of raming lumber.
9. (2) 2x6 - 12' sections of framing lumber.
10. (4) 2x6 - 16' sections of framing lumber.

First Step: Prepare The Framework
Using the 2x6s to put together a 12'x32' frame. Make sure that it is in the form of a square. You can keep the square in place by putting a 30" piece of rebar in each corner.

Second Step: Add Hoops
Put the rebar in the ground on the outside of the frame. Put it about 15" into the ground and keep 15" sticking up out of the ground.

Third Step: PVC Pipes Over Rebar
Slide both ends of the PVC pipes over the rebar pieces to make a hoop across the entire width of the greenhouse. Screw the PVC pipes attached to the wood by using metal banding around the pipes.

Fourth Step: Preparing The Ends
Cut the 12' 2x4s into the following pieces:
(2) 11'8 3/4"
(4) 4'7"
(4) 1'6"
(4) 5'7"
(8) 1'11 1/4"
(2) 4'1/4"

The 5'7" pieces should stand up and form a door. The 4'1/4" runs across the 5'7" door. The (2) 4'7" and the 1'11 1/4" serves as reinforcement and looks like a smaller door on both sides of the large center 5'7" door. The 1'6" and the 1'11 1/4" looks like an even smaller door and serves as extra reinforcement as well.

Take two PVC pipes that are 32' long and run it across the hoops. This will form ribs for the hoop greenhouse. Tie the 32' PVC pipe to the ribs of the hoop using zip ties.

Fifth Step: Covering The Greenhouse in Plastic
Drape a sturdy 4 mil plastic over the length of the greenhouse with overlap at the ends in order to cover the end walls. Use wood lathe or staples to keep the plastic in place.

Sixth Step:
Build a door frame by cutting the 12' 2x4s and place it in the frame of the 4'1/4" mad 5'7" door space. Attach a hinge and cover this door in plastic as well. Attach door handles to the door and mount it to the frame.

And there you have it... a PVC greenhouse. This is the simplest of all backyard greenhouse designs to build but they do the trick quite well in my experience. Happy green-housing!

Almost as important as the flowers, the edging is like the frame to your garden. The picture can be interesting and beautiful, but it needs a frame to really enhance its appearance. Just like a picture, your garden needs it's frame to really bring out the beauty of your living "work of art".

Iron Frame Beds

There are many different types of edgings and you must plan which one will look best in your garden. One popular type of edging is to use a low brick or rock wall, cemented together with mortar. This will create a beautiful and permanent edge to your garden. Of course, not everyone has the means, money or desire to do this.

Another lovely way of edging is to simply place bricks around the borders of your garden. You can put them in a line, stacked in a double row, set on their edges or tip them diagonally and lean them against each other.

In a similar fashion, you can use large rocks to edge your garden. Use rocks that are big enough to make an impact, but ones that you can easily carry and move yourself. You can gather the rocks from fields, the woods or friends yards for free!

In your garden supply store, you will find many manufactured edgings to suite any style of garden. Miniature fences, fake rocks, plastic, metal - you name it, they have it. I prefer a more natural type edging, but if you must buy one of these, choose a good quality product and not something that looks cheap and will only last for 1 season.

You can always create a living edging by using a border plant. Some great border plants include
alpine phlox which is suitable for most climates and can be divided and planted again and again, gazanias, pansies, petunias and violas.

If you pick perennial plants, like the alpine phlox or gazania, then you can divide them and propagate them throughout the border. This will help reduce costs as you won't have to keep buying new plants, but will take longer to establish a full border.

For large gardens, comfrey can make a good border. It has thick growth and will prevent grasses from encroaching on the garden. Also, you can use the leaves for mulch around y our other plants. When blooming, the tiny flowers will add interest to your border. Keep in mind, however, that comfrey is not suitable for small gardens as it can easily overwhelm the other plants.

One of my favourite ways to edge a garden is to use an herb border. Even strawberries can be used as a border and their bright flowers and lush fruits will add quite a bit of interest to any garden. When preparing meals, simply step out in to the garden and cut some fresh herbs each evening!

Perhaps the simplest form of edging is to take a shovel and bevel and edge all around the garden. The can be a nice subtle way to break up the line between garden and grass. You can rent a gas powered edging tool if shovelling by hand seems like too much work. This type of edging will need to be redone each year.

No matter what option you choose, your gardens will take on another dimension with it's framed edging.

Bunk beds are a wonderful space saving way to fit two beds in the space of one. These beds are an ideal way to have more space for two children sharing a room or to provide an extra bed for those overnight guests of your child. Bunk bed frames come in many styles, colors, and materials and some of the latest innovations even allow for day time sitting and night time sleeping.

Frames for bunk beds can be made out of wood, wrought iron, brass, other metals, or composite material. These frames are usually designed so that a mattress is used without the need for a box spring. They consist of some type of upper bunk usually with a ladder to get onto the bed and rails on around the top frame. The bottom frame is usually without rails as there is less chance of injury when falling out.

Traditional bunk bed frames are made up of two twin size frames that sit atop one another. Many are attached by the head and foot board although there are some frames that can be made into separate twin beds for later use. Other models simply consist of the top bunk with the tent underneath minus the bed. Some of these frames even have slides to go from the top bunk to the floor. These beds provide a wonderful play experience for young children making their bedroom a fun place to be.

They can provide for a lot of space saving in a variety ways, making them an ideal choice for smaller rooms. However, keep in mind that young children could be injured if they fall from the top bunk so it is best these beds be used for older children or younger ones occupy the bottom level.
